Independent guides to mold, testing, and removal

Most mold is a moisture problem you can solve.

Mold Removal Hub is a library of 64 plain-language guides on inspecting, testing, removing, and preventing household mold. Each one is written to help you tell a small job from a big one, fix the water behind it, and know which patches are worth a licensed pro.

Found mold today?

Four things to do before you touch it.

  1. Do not scrub it dry

Dry scrubbing or sanding sends spores across the room. Leave the patch alone until you can clean it wet and contained.

  2. Photograph it first

Shoot the growth and the area around it before you touch anything. The record helps with landlords, insurers, and any pro you call.

  3. Find the moisture source

Mold is a symptom of water. A leak, condensation, or damp you do not fix will grow it right back within weeks.

  4. Measure the patch

EPA guidance puts the rough line at about 10 square feet. Smaller is often a careful DIY job; larger is worth a remediation pro who can contain it.

Mold can take hold on damp material within 24 to 48 hours. Fix the water and the rest gets easier.

Questions we hear most

What humidity level prevents mold?

Keep indoor relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent, and never let it sit above 60 percent for days at a stretch. That is the range the EPA points to. In cold weather you have to go lower than 50 percent, because as outdoor temperatures fall your windows and exterior wall corners get colder, and those surfaces start collecting water long before the room average looks bad.

How long does hydrogen peroxide take to kill mold?

Give it about 10 minutes of undisturbed wet contact on hard surfaces, and closer to 15 on grout. The surface has to stay visibly wet the whole time, so re-spray anything vertical that runs dry. Scrubbing at the two-minute mark is the most common reason peroxide appears not to work.

Does homeowners insurance cover black mold?

Carriers do not rate coverage by species. Black mold is covered if it followed a sudden, accidental water event, denied if it followed a slow leak, seepage, flooding, or humidity. A lab result naming Stachybotrys changes the remediation scope, not the coverage decision.

Can black mold kill you?

Direct fatalities from black mold exposure in otherwise healthy adults are extremely rare, and mainstream medicine doesn't recognize 'toxic mold syndrome' as a formal diagnosis. The real risk is chronic respiratory illness and severe allergic or asthmatic reactions, concentrated in infants, the elderly, and anyone immunocompromised.

Does mold have a smell?

Active, growing mold almost always produces a musty, earthy odor caused by the gases it releases while feeding on damp material. Dormant spores that aren't actively growing may not produce enough of those gases to notice.
